Your Guide to LAPIP® and Why You Might Need It

Technology has made some amazing advancements over recent decades. In addition to dentures, we can now offer several options to individuals who suffer from multiple missing teeth. Some people opt for dental implants, which are a more permanent solution embedded straight into the jawbone to function like a natural tooth. Even when you have an implant, however, it is important to properly brush and floss your teeth. Even artificial teeth are subject to diseases such as peri-implantitis. If you are diagnosed with peri-implantitis, then you might benefit from Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure (LAPIP®).

About Peri-Implantitis

Peri-implantitis is essentially the same thing as periodontal disease. However, whereas periodontal disease affects natural teeth, peri-implantitis is gum disease of artificial teeth, specifically implants. Like regular gum disease, this condition is a result of poor oral hygiene. Receiving a diagnosis early on can help to get the mouth back in a healthy state. Late diagnosis can put the implant at risk of needing to be removed.

Laser Treatment May Help

LAPIP® is a type of laser dentistry in Monroe, CT, designed to treat peri-implantitis. It is similar to LANAP® which eradicates gum disease. The laser, known as PerioLase® MVP-7, targets the diseased tissue around the implant. The laser differentiates between healthy and diseased tissue and only removes the affected areas. This means the healthy tissue is left intact and is allowed to regenerate over time. Because there is no incision to make, extra tissue to remove, or need to remove any bone, the procedure is less painful and requires less time to recover than one where cutting and extra tissue removal is necessary.
